Design Considerations
When designing a living wall, we work with our clients to consider factors such as:
Lighting Design and Exposure:
- What type of light does the wall get?
- Which direction does the light come from?
- How many hours of sun will your wall get?
Answers to these questions will guide what types of plants may be used as well as which vertical wall system might work best. In most cases, a special lighting design will need to be completed and installed by an electrician.
Water:
- Will a water line and a drain line be available at the wall?
Depending on the size of the living wall a water and drain line might not be necessary.
Substructure:
- What type of material will the plants hang on?
- Wood stud, metal stud, concrete block?
- Has an engineer been consulted to be sure that the wall can support the additional 10-25 lbs per square foot of eccentric load?
Installation Considerations
Now comes the exciting (and tricky) part - the installation!
Access:
- Are there any obstacles in reaching the wall?
- Can it be accessed with a ladder or do we need a special lift?
- Who is supplying the lift or ladder and where will they be stored?
- What is directly below the wall?
- How much open space is there in front of the wall?
